30/03/2019: Masai Mara

This was our final day on safari.  George asked us if we wanted to go out all day or take two separate drives.  We asked which he thought was best and he suggested go out early in the morning.  Take a break around lunch and then go back out in the late afternoon.

Because every day has been so full it is hard to keep up with the blog.  It's also difficult to say much more than we saw this and we saw that.  Worde can not do the experience justice.

We were the only people down for breakfast and for once were early for George.  The skies were overcast and we noticed that some of the giraffe and buffalo were lying down.  Joan asked if the animals did this when there was rain in the air, as cows do at home.  George said he had never heard of such a thing.

The only one of the big seven we had not seen was a rhino.  George said we would be lucky to see one, but he picked up a message on the radio and after some looking we found a rhino with birds resting on its back.  There were only a few glimpses before it managed to slip away.

We head back to the area where we had seen the leopard the night before,  There were already several vehicles there.  The leopard was on the prowl.  He sat up like a meerkat with hs paws in front.  George said he had never seen a cat behave like this before.  We stalked him for a while and then went on to see three lionesses who were basking on a hill, again oblivious to the vehicles parked up alongside them.  One of the lionesses was quite lame.

We saw vultures and crowned hornbills as well as the other gazelles, zebra and wildebeests. For a while we followed a magnificent male lion who walked in front of us and crouched by a stream drinking.

Just before lunch we caught up with the five male cheetahs who were eyeing up a couple of zebra who had been separated from the herd.  The zebra knew they were there and swished their tails.  Eventually the zebra made of and the cheetah came right up to our vehicles, passing centimetre=res away.

We ate lunch alone - lots more curry but also one pasta dish.  Our waiter, Benson, explained how he worked one month on and one month off.  He wanted to go into hospitality management.

After a nap, we were off again.  This time we asked to look at landscape and George took us to the hills to look down on the park.  He was also trying to find a rhino that was meant to be in the area.

There were hundreds of buffalo grazing nearby.  We saw a couple of giraffe having a swing at each other with their necks.  The cracking sound was quite gruesome.  Later we saw a couple of zebra having a tussle by the road.

Aa night fell, we headed back through the check points out of the main park and at the lodge.  From the bar of the restaurant we could see the crocodile.  The genet came by again but was chased off by one of the hotel's domestic cats.

A man played guitar in the bar whilst the birthday party danced.
