Monday 15th December 2025 - South coast

It had rained overnight again so there was more mopping of floors to be done.  Our host offered to bring more towels but we were drying those that she had provided on the balcony.

After breakfast we headed to the south of the island to see the attractions there.  The roads are new and not too crowded and it doesn't seem too long to get anywhere.  And almost everywhere there is a view of the Atlantic.

First stop was the green lagoon near the fishing port of El Golfo.  We last visited here 20 years ago and the access to the beach has changed.  Whereas last time you could walk down to the beach, it is now viewed from a mirador above the site.  Joan remembers sitting on the beach and looking for granules of Olivine, a local, semi-precious stone.

In a small cove near the village a fashion photo shoot was taking place.

Next up was los Hervideros, literally the boiling pots.  It's where waves crashing into the lava flows from the 1730s, and create frothing seas.  There are caves and blow holes to watch it from.  It leaves you in no doubt of the power of the ocean.

The lava flows from Timanfaya are like glaciars, covering a quarter of the island.

Finally it was on to see the salt flats where salt was traditionally harvested to preserve fish.

We drove home cross country, but no matter how much you divert, you are soon home.

We had some nibbles on our west facing balcony and watched it darken.  We went to bed early too full for dinner.
